As a medical practice manager, it is important to know if your investments are paying off, and how effective each one has been. So, how can you measure if your employee training initiatives are actually improving your bottom line?

This week we were at the MGMA Operations Conference in Austin, Texas talking to practice managers and doctors about patient experience training for medical practices. KPIs were an ongoing topic because nobody has time to launch new efforts without understanding how to measure if it’s going to work or not.

Before you start your next employee training initiative, here are two key measurements you should look at to gauge the effectiveness.

2 Ways to Measure the Effectiveness of Your Employee Training and Engagement Initiatives

1. Start with your reputation scores.

You should already be monitoring the percentage of positive vs negative patient reviews for your physicians and offices, so let’s use this measurement as a starting point. We track reputation scores for our clients and see an average of 87% positive to negative reviews monthly. We use this measurement to gauge the effectiveness of employee training initiatives, like improved customer service training programs, and whether or not they are a good investment for the practice.

2. Look at your employee turnover.

On average, we see about 12% employee turnover in the current economic landscape. Compared to this average, where does your practice stand? Can you reduce turnover by putting a new employee training initiative into place? Once you are diligently tracking statistics like employee turnover in your practice, it will be easy to see which engagement initiatives are having the greatest positive effect.

Before starting a new employee training initiative, use these two pieces of advice to gauge the effectiveness of your training programs. When you combine reputations scores and employee turnover, the data you receive is very useful for determining which investments actually affect your company’s bottom line. At the end of the day, the best employee training programs are the ones that have the greatest measurable effect on your practice. Following this advice will make it easier to target those training programs.
